Setanta Orienteers is an affiliated club of the Irish Orienteering Association (IOA). The club was founded in the late 1970s when the then Irish Orienteers Club was split into four new Dublin based clubs. This split was based on a geographic division with Setanta taking on the members in the area that included Rathfarnham, Rathgar, Terenure, Tallaght and West Dublin. Club membership records date back to 1978/79, which appears to be the first year of the new clubs existence.

Twenty five years plus later and Setanta Orienteers is now one of the leading Leinster orienteering clubs and as can be seen in these pages is very much involved in competition and event organisation. The spread of membership has also expanded beyond its original genesis and now has members living in all parts of Dublin, other parts if Ireland notably Counties Wicklow and Westmeath, and a few living abroad. The active membership is currently around 50-60

with a good mix of men and women of all ages. Competition levels range from league, regional and national championships to the mainly social and recreational involvement at local level.
Our main interest is obviously in the sport of orienteering and we are always well represented at the major events here in Ireland as well as events abroad. The club itself organises many events each year including Leinster League events, night events, local events and the Wicklow Mountains Rogaine each summer. Recently some of our members have become involved in mountain bike orienteering, which is a new and growing

aspect of the sport. Besides orienteering we are also well represented in other adventure sports like mountain running, mountain marathons, adventure marathons, and other related sports. The club also organises a couple of mountain walks each year, one always just after Christmas, as purely social outings.
In 2003/2004 Setanta were overall winners of the Leinster League (Autumn Series, Spring Cup and Individual Events). We organised the Leinster Championships in 2004, 2001 and 1997 and many more in past years. In 2004/2005 we are planning to run six open events (see our fixtures page) and other club social and training events.

Club members are circulated with the Irish Orienteer publication and its own club newsletter “Tales from the Undergrowth”. Club membership also entitles members to discounts on event entries and allows entry to regional and national championships. To keep in touch with each other we have our own electronic mail group and club members may join by sending an e-mail message to setanta-subscribe@yahoo.com.

In summary, Setanta Orienteers is a well-established and reputable orienteering club. We are very active and would welcome new individual and family members. If you are interested please contact us.
